The Issue

Dear Honorable Governor of Florida, Florida State Attorneys, and Relevant Authorities,
We, the undersigned, humbly request leniency in the case of Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Punjabi truck driver charged with vehicular homicide following a tragic road accident on the Florida Turnpike on August 12, 2025. While we deeply mourn the loss of three innocent lives and acknowledge the gravity of the incident, we believe the potential 45-year sentence is disproportionately harsh for what appears to be an unintentional error in judgment—an illegal U-turn without malice or prior criminal intent.
Harjinder Singh entered the United States in search of a better life and has no history of violence or crime. He is a young man whose actions, though negligent, were not deliberate. Imprisoning him for decades would devastate his family: his elderly mother is alone at home in Punjab, India, with no other support, relying on him emotionally and financially. Releasing him or reducing his sentence to a shorter term (e.g., 5-10 years) with parole, community service, or deportation after serving time would allow him to care for her and rebuild his life.
Additionally, the Sikh and Punjabi community, to which Harjinder belongs, has a strong history of service and compassion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our community provided extensive help worldwide, including food distribution, medical aid, and support to frontline workers in the USA and beyond. We ask that this spirit of humanity be extended to Harjinder, considering alternatives to a maximum sentence that promote rehabilitation over pure punishment.
We urge you to consider:
A reduced sentence with eligibility for early release or parole.
Community service or restorative justice programs.
Humanitarian deportation after a fair trial, allowing him to support his mother.
Your compassionate decision would uphold justice while showing mercy. Thank you for considering this plea.
Sincerely,
