Release the John Woo Cut of Mission: Impossible II – #ReleaseTheWooCut

The Issue

To the leadership at Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media, including:
Brian Robbins (President & CEO, Paramount Pictures)
Marc Weinstock (President, Worldwide Marketing & Distribution)
Emma Watts (President, Motion Picture Group, Paramount)

We, the undersigned, are writing to express strong support for the release of the extended director’s cut of Mission: Impossible II. This version reflects the original vision of legendary filmmaker John Woo.

Over two decades since its release, Mission: Impossible II remains a pivotal entry in the franchise’s evolution. It helped transform the series into the globe-trotting, stunt-driven juggernaut we know today, thanks in no small part to Tom Cruise’s death-defying commitment to practical stunts and Woo’s signature blend of kinetic action and operatic style. MI2 introduced key hallmarks that have since become staples of the films, such as the iconic use of facial disguises by both heroes and villains, and a bolder, more physical approach to spycraft that set the tone for every subsequent sequel.

Despite its box office success, the version audiences saw was not the whole story.  While the theatrical cut was a commercial success, it’s widely known that Woo’s original version was substantially more extended, with expanded character development, emotional nuance, and a rhythm more in tune with Woo’s operatic storytelling and visual signature. In interviews, including his appearance on the Light the Fuse podcast, Woo confirmed that this earlier cut was heavily trimmed during post-production. As fans of the Mission universe and of Woo’s legacy in international cinema, we believe the time is right to revisit this version and make it available to the public at large.

Releasing the Woo Cut isn’t just an artistic gesture; it’s a smart business move. A restored cut would serve as high-value content for Paramount+, where exclusive material drives engagement, retention, and new subscriptions. It would also present a prime opportunity for physical re-release in the form of a collector’s edition, which is an increasingly lucrative market among cinephiles and franchise completists. Globally, the Mission: Impossible brand remains one of Paramount’s most profitable assets; a reappraisal of this key installment would invite media coverage, fan discourse, and renewed merchandise/licensing activity. We feel the investment in restoring the Woo Cut is far outweighed by the potential for long-tail revenue across digital, physical, and international channels.

We respectfully urge Paramount Pictures to assess the availability of John Woo’s original extended cut of Mission: Impossible II, collaborate with Mr. Woo to prepare the film for release in the most complete form possible, and to distribute the restored version digitally, physically, or through streaming as part of the property’s historical arc.

This request is made out of deep admiration for the film, for Woo’s legacy, and for the franchise that continues to set the gold standard for cinematic action. We believe a release of the Woo Cut would be embraced not only by devoted fans but by a new generation eager to experience the origins of Mission: Impossible as it exists today.

We welcome a dialogue with Paramount and would be eager to support this release with fan outreach, social media engagement, and positive press.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
