Release Song of the South!

The Issue

Song of the South, amidst its controversy, is a beloved Disney film that people of all ages could learn from. I will acknowledge that the movie is very stereotypical in its depiction of black people, even though it wasn’t done out of malice. The movie takes place during the reconstruction era where black people are depicted as being content with plantation life. Despite all this, there are positive aspects of Uncle Remus’ character. He is kind and benevolent instead of being criminalized, which happens a lot with the black community. Exposing kids to his character could have positive results in terms of race relations. Also, the live action segments depict a privileged white boy getting along with the black plantation workers, particularly Uncle Remus whom the kid sees as a fatherly figure. Song of the South is a remarkable and sweet movie that has been shunned by people who either haven’t seen the movie or have badly misinterpreted it. The Disney executives need to stop ostracizing this movie and look at it from a grey perspective.
