Release Ruben Torres and Let Him Be With His Daughter as She Fights Cancer

Release Ruben Torres and Let Him Be With His Daughter as She Fights Cancer
The Issue
Ruben Torres has lived in the United States since 2003. For over two decades, he’s worked tirelessly as a painter, building a life in the Chicago area and supporting his family. Now, in the middle of his daughter Ofelia’s fight against Stage 4 cancer, he’s been detained by ICE and torn from his family.
Just days after 16-year-old Ofelia was discharged from the hospital, federal agents arrested her father in a Home Depot parking lot in Niles, Illinois. Since then, Ruben has been moved between detention centers, leaving his family—especially his daughter—confused, frightened, and without the man who has always provided for them.
Ruben has no criminal record. His attorney confirms that he’s eligible for “cancellation of removal,” which would allow him to remain in the country lawfully and continue caring for his family. Community members, elected officials like Chicago Alderman Matt Martin, and everyday neighbors are speaking out against the cruelty of detaining a father while his daughter battles for her life.
Ofelia bravely spoke at a public meeting with Congressman Mike Quigley, pleading: “You guys are targeting the wrong people… They don’t deserve it.” She’s right. What Ruben’s family is enduring is unjust—and preventable.
This petition calls on ICE and federal immigration officials to release Ruben Torres immediately and allow him to remain with his family while his case is reviewed. He is not a threat. He is a father. And his daughter needs him now more than ever.
Immigration enforcement must not come at the cost of basic human compassion. Families like the Torreses are not statistics—they are people with lives, histories, and deep roots in our communities. Stand with Ofelia. Demand Ruben’s release.
Sign now to tell ICE and our elected officials: Let Ruben Torres go home.
