Release Imran Khan and Supporters Unjustly Detained in Pakistan

The Issue

As a Pakistani, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing human rights violations happening in my country. Our former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, along with thousands of peaceful protestors have been held in prison cells for over four months without due process. The supporters of Imran Khan are being subjected to abductions, torture, forced statements and threats to their family members. This is not the Pakistan we believe in.

Journalists who dare to report these atrocities are silenced by force - they are either killed or tortured or simply disappear without a trace. According to some reports, over 20 thousand people have been arrested and denied basic human rights while in detention.

The situation is dire and requires immediate attention from international human rights organizations as well as our own government officials who still uphold the principles of justice and freedom. We cannot stand by while our fellow citizens suffer such gross injustices.

Pakistan's democracy & stability is under serious threat, as is the life of its most popular leader, former PM Imran Khan.

Recently, in direct violation of Article 21 of the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Election Commission of Pakistan has illegally and unconstitutionally ordered the postponement of Provincial elections in Punjab, Pakistan's largest province, from April to October. A move widely perceived to be orchestrated by the military establishment in Pakistan.

This delay in elections also violates Pakistan's Constitution and orders by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

This delay is part of a hazardous plan to assassinate Imran Khan, Pakistan's most popular leader, who is still recovering from an assassination attempt in November 2022.

Such actions will likely result in massive reaction and violence within Pakistan and unpredictable regional and world peace and security consequences.

If civil war erupts in the world's 5th most populous & nuclear-armed state, it will likely engulf South Asia, and the Middle East, with a huge impact on security in Europe and North America.

Please use your influence and position to ensure the Pakistani government and the Election Commission respect the constitutional mandate and hold free and fair elections on time. I also request that Imran Khan's life and safety be protected as he symbolises hope and change for millions of Pakistanis who want a free, democratic, prosperous and peaceful future for their country.

Democracy is not only a right but also a responsibility for every citizen of this planet. I hope you will stand with Pakistan and democracy in this critical historical moment.
