Release Imran Khan
The issue
As an Australian of Pakistani origin, I am deeply concerned about the current situation surrounding Imran Khan, a democratically elected leader, who is currently imprisoned under dire conditions. It is deeply troubling and heart-wrenching to witness a leader who earned the people's trust through a democratic process being subjected to such inhumane treatment. This personal matter resonates with me because the principles of democracy seem to be undermined when a leader is denied basic human rights such as medical treatment and family visitation.
Imran Khan, a prominent political figure, a cricketer and a person of integrity who has received global support to establish Cancer Treatment and Research Centres across Pakistan, establish NAMAL University to provide best education to those who cannot afford. According to numerous reports, his detention lacks transparency and he has been deprived of fundamental rights accorded to prisoners. This sets a dangerous precedent for the sanctity of democratic values in our nation.
Democracy thrives in an environment where freedom of speech and fair treatment under the law are protected and where leaders are held accountable through open and just processes. Imran Khan's current plight is antithetical to these foundational principles, raising severe concerns both nationally and internationally about the state of democracy in Pakistan.
Imran Khan deserves a fair trial, humane treatment, and the right to be reunited with his family during this trying time. Through this petition, we are requesting The Hon Senator Penny Wong to raise our concerns with the government of Pakistan, request the Australian High Commissioner to meet with his sisters and if possible visit Imran Khan in Adiala Prison. Already, the matter is raised in the Parliament by Senator David Shoebridge and Senator Fatma Payman. We need action.
