Relax the rules surrounding high schoolers' toilet access

Relax the rules surrounding high schoolers' toilet access
The Issue
As a dedicated educator working in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) high school, I have witnessed firsthand the profound benefits of prioritizing the individual needs of students. Our commitment to tailoring our approach to each student’s requirements has resulted in an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters both academic and personal growth. This experience has left me questioning: why should mainstream schools be any different?
In many mainstream high schools, students face restrictive policies when it comes to accessing basic facilities like toilets. These restrictions can be both physically and mentally challenging, creating undue stress and discomfort. Denying students the right to use the toilet when needed is not only an infringement on their basic human rights, but it can also have adverse effects on their health and wellbeing. The discomfort from holding in their bodily needs can distract students, hindering their concentration and affecting their performance in school.
Moreover, enforcing such rigid rules does not account for the diverse needs of individual students. For instance, students with medical conditions like diabetes or urinary tract issues require more frequent trips to the bathroom. Female students may need more flexibility during their menstrual cycles, and many students experience anxiety and stress that can exacerbate these needs. By implementing a more flexible approach to bathroom use, schools can demonstrate genuine care for their students' health and promote a more inclusive educational environment.
To tackle this issue, schools should consider adopting a more lenient policy that allows students to access the toilet as needed, without fear of punishment or reprimand. Clear guidelines can be established to ensure that this privilege is not misused, such as requiring students to sign in and out or providing hall passes. This will ensure that facilities are not exploited while still maintaining the dignity and comfort of students.
Furthermore, evidence from SEN schools and institutions that have embraced flexible bathroom policies shows improvements in student satisfaction, attendance, and overall performance. It's time for mainstream schools to follow suit and implement changes that will benefit all students.
I urge educational boards and school administrators to revisit and revise their bathroom policies, keeping in mind the diverse needs of their students. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more compassionate, understanding, and equitable approach to education that values student wellbeing above rigid, outdated regulations.
