I, along with many others, have experienced the frustration of being banned from Roblox voice chat for what we believe are unjust reasons. This has limited our freedom of speech and hindered our ability to fully enjoy the gaming experience. The current profanity restrictions on Roblox voice chat in games for users aged 13 and above are excessively stringent. We understand the need to maintain a safe environment, but these restrictions often penalize verified users who aren't engaging in harmful or offensive behavior.

According to a study by Ditch The Label (2019), over half of young people use online gaming as a space to express themselves freely. Yet, overly restrictive language policies can stifle this self-expression and lead to an unfair punishment like banning.

We propose that Roblox Corporation reassess their profanity restrictions specifically for verified users participating in 13+ games. A more balanced approach could involve implementing an improved reporting system or using AI technology to distinguish between harmless banter and genuinely offensive language. Offensive language restrictions should also be lessened, as those over the age of 13 are more than mature enough to hear swearing. Sexually explicit language, however, should continue to have the same restrictions in place.
