The Issue

The current application for the cable route for Whitecross Offshore Windfarm plans to go through Saunton beach car park, behind the UNESCO Biosphere and across the world class Saunton Golf course drilling through unstable sand dunes and potentially a WW2 munitions dump. The proposal will impact severely on the already heavily strained local road network. The negative impact to the local economy should not be underestimated. We feel there’s been a lack of engagement by the developers with the local community. In any case this proposed route offers no benefit to the local economy and will have a severely negative effect on Saunton, Braunton and the surrounding area. We do not understand why the alternative route up the estuary has not been chosen  by the developers. This is an experimental project and it promises to disrupt the local environment and economy to a much greater extent than it will benefit them. To be clear, we are not against FLOW but are opposed to the current planning application and its proposed onshore route.

Addendum : Since creating this petition late last year, our preferred option for the cable route is now is not via the estuary, but for it to follow the Xlinks project corridor from Cornborough (below Westward Ho!, the old Atlantic Array landing point) to Alverdiscott. Our understanding is that Whitecross has chosen to connect at Yelland over Alverdiscott which is a regrettable decision for our local community.
