Reject nepotism at Stellenbosch University

The Issue

It has been widely reported that the SU rector, Prof Wim de Villiers, used his discretionary powers to secure a place for a family member to study medicine. The family member's admission to the program was only withdrawn after complaints from another interested party. The rector has subsequently also admitted that he used his discretionary powers to admit another family member into a program of SU. News reports have indicated that the second family member of the rector was also admitted to study medicine through the use of the rector's discretionary powers. This is blatant Nepotism.

All members of the SU convocation are hereby called upon to reject any form of Nepotism at SU and to show their support for the motion adopted by the Executive Committee of the SU Convocation, whereby the rector has been requested to resign.

The voices of all old Maties need to be heard on this matter. By signing this petition you will add support to the demand for ethical leadership and good governance as expressed by the executive committee of the SU convocation and others.

All SU graduates, full time and retired academic staff and all diplomates (those who has received a diploma) who wish to support and sign this petition, should do so by providing their surname, initials and first year of study/enrolment at SU (if possible you can also provide your student number if you still have it).
