The Issue

Mets owner Steve Cohen's proposal to build a casino next to Citi Field is a matter of great concern for many community residents in Flushing. We must come together to protect the character and quality of our community.

This move would hurt so many people who grew up in Flushing, and not to mention accelerate gentrification in Flushing (and nearby neighborhoods). Many of the small, family-owned businesses may not be able to survive rent hikes and the higher operating costs associated with a casino. Rising property values and rents could push out low and middle income families, many of whom are immigrants and have lived there for decades.

Casinos can increase debt, addiction, and poverty among nearby residents. So imagine a casino in Flushing (which already has pockets of economic hardship) targeting the most vulnerable with aggressive marketing and easy to access gambling.

Flushing is already one of the most congested areas in Queens (specifically Downtown), so imagine how much worse it would get with a casino complex, which could mean thousands more cars daily, which could worsen pollution and commute times for residents.

In addition, the proposed site for the casino is technically public parkland connected to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Many residents see the casino as a commercial takeover of public land, which would deprive families of open space in a dense urban area. There is also concern about pollution runoff and loss of green buffer zones around the park and Flushing Creek.

Lastly, Flushing has deep cultural roots — Chinese, Korean, South Asian, and Latino communities have made it one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Queens. Imagine an attractive casino eroding that character, hurting so many people who grew up in Flushing.

Assemblymember Ron Kim, Senator John Liu, and Councilmember Sandra Ung have the power to influence the decision on this proposal. By voting NO, they can stand with their constituents to uphold the integrity and safety of our beloved neighborhood. We kindly urge them to prioritize the community's voice and the long-term welfare of the area over short-term economic gains presented by the casino proposal.

Let us protect our community's heart and soul for future generations. We need your support in urging these government officials to reject the proposal for a casino next to Citi Field. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and bring about the change we are all striving for.
