The Issue

As a Grade 8 student in Unionville, Markham, I've noticed a change that has left me and my classmates feeling overlooked. With the inclusion of Grade 9 students in our school, certain privileges we used to enjoy have been taken away from us - notably the tradition of having our own yearbook graduation quotes. This was something previous Grade 8 classes looked forward to and cherished as part of their transition into high school.

This is not just about yearbook quotes; it's about maintaining traditions that make each grade level feel special and valued. It's disheartening to see these traditions disappear due to changes in the school structure. We understand that accommodating an additional grade level requires adjustments but believe it should not come at the expense of other students' experiences.

According to Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), inclusive education policies can significantly improve students' sense of belonging and overall well-being (CCPA, "Inclusive Education Policies in Canada"). By reinstating yearbook quotes for Grade 8 students, our school can take one small step towards fostering this inclusivity.

We urge the administration at our school in Unionville, Markham to reconsider this decision and restore yearbook quotes for Grade 8 students. Please sign this petition if you support equal recognition and opportunities for all grades within our schools.
