Reinstate Wrongfully Disabled Facebook Accounts and Improve Meta’s Appeal Process

Reinstate Wrongfully Disabled Facebook Accounts and Improve Meta’s Appeal Process
The Issue
Thousands of UK Facebook users have had their accounts disabled or deleted without clear explanation or access to a proper appeal process. Many of these accounts contained years of personal memories, photos, and communications.
Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook and Instagram, routinely disables accounts automatically — sometimes in error — and its current systems often leave users with no meaningful way to recover access or even receive a reply.
We, the undersigned, call on Meta Platforms and the UK Government to:
• Ensure Meta provides a transparent, functioning appeal process for account closures.
• Require Meta to respond to UK users’ appeals within a reasonable timeframe.
• Reinstate accounts that were wrongfully disabled.
• Allow users permanent access to their data (photos, messages, contacts) even if an account is under review.
Why this matters:
Facebook is an essential communication tool for millions in the UK. Losing access without explanation or redress is not only distressing but can also disrupt businesses, families, and community groups who rely on the platform.
We urge Meta to take responsibility for its users, and we call on the UK Government and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to ensure accountability and fair treatment for all affected individuals.
