As a member of the Niagara Regional Municipality, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision to cut funding for the summer language programs within our District School Board of Niagara (DSBN). These programs are more than just educational tools; they serve as vital links that connect minority students with their communities and their cultural roots.

The importance of these programs cannot be overstated. According to Statistics Canada, over 20% of our population in Niagara is made up of immigrants. Many families rely on these summer language programs to help their children maintain fluency in their native languages and stay connected with their cultural heritage.

Cutting funding for these essential services not only impacts our students but also weakens the multicultural fabric that makes our community so unique and vibrant. We must remember that diversity is one of Canada's greatest strengths, and we should do everything we can to support it.

We urge DSBN and relevant authorities to reconsider this decision. The benefits these language programs bring far outweigh any potential savings from cutting them. Let us prioritize education, culture, diversity, and most importantly, our students' needs.
