Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine for Balanced Media Reporting

The Issue

I am a concerned citizen deeply disturbed by the one-sidedness and bias that pervades our media today. The press, often called the Fourth Estate, is intended to be a watchdog over people and institutions, ensuring accountability. However, eliminating the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 led to a significant shift in this sector.

The Fairness Doctrine, established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1949, mandated that radio and television broadcasters present both sides of a controversial issue. to ensure that the public was exposed to diverse viewpoints, promoting a well-informed and healthy democracy.

However, since its abolishment, there has been an undeniable increase in radically partisan media outlets, contributing to the heightened divisions within our society. According to a research study conducted by Pew Research Center, 64% of Americans say fake news has caused "a great deal" of confusion about basic facts of current events.

The detrimental impact is evident. Hence, this petition calls for the Federal Communications Commission and our lawmakers to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, ensuring an unbiased, balanced media that fosters reasoned and responsible debate. We need our media to create an informed citizenry, not further devise it. Join me in demanding this critical reform—sign this petition today.
