Reinstate street lighting in Norfolk

The Issue

The absence of street lighting in Norfolk has a significant impact on the lives of many in our community. Without adequate lighting, our roads have become not only unpleasant but also unsafe. This is particularly concerning for those of us who walk or cycle, especially women, who now feel deterred from venturing out alone after dark. Norfolk County Council's de-illumination scheme (i.e. the decision to switch off existing low energy, low-cost lighting across the county) is a perplexing and, frankly, perverse move.

Norfolk is a vibrant region with a rich history and a thriving community. Yet, when the sun sets, many of us are closed off from enjoying this because of the lack of a basic safety feature—street lighting. Street lights play a critical role in ensuring our public spaces are safe and welcoming, reducing the risk of accidents and discouraging criminal activity.

This decision affects everyone but has a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable members of our community. According to the Department for Transport, nighttime highway accident rates can increase by up to three times when roads are not adequately lit. Furthermore, studies have shown that well-lit areas have a 20% lower crime rate due to enhanced visibility.

Instead of switching off these essential lights, the council should explore sustainable and cost-effective alternatives. These could include transitioning to solar-powered lights or applying for government grants aimed at reducing energy costs for essential community services.

We understand the need for fiscal responsibility, but safety should not come at the expense of saving money. It's crucial for our local authorities to explore other ways to ensure public safety while respecting budgetary constraints.

Join us in urging Norfolk County Council to review this decision and take immediate action to reinstate street lighting across our county. Please sign this petition to voice your concern and help make Norfolk's streets safe again after dark.
