Reinstate Rhyl's iconic kiosks and bring a free attraction to town
The Issue
Growing up in Rhyl, I have witnessed first-hand the vibrancy and charm that our seaside town holds. The kiosks along the promenade have always been a quintessential part of this charm. These kiosks are much more than just structures; they are an integral slice of our cultural and historical identity—offering memories, livelihoods, and a warm welcome to the tourists who frequent our shores.
However, recent decisions have led to the removal of these beloved kiosks, striking a blow to both the character of Rhyl and the economy of our community. For decades, Rhyl has been cherished by locals and tourists alike. The kiosks were more than a place to buy traditional seaside treats; they stood as landmarks of local enterprise, where small businesses have thrived and offered unique, personal experiences to visitors.
Tourism is critical to Rhyl's economy, acting as a lifeline to many local businesses. According to Visit Wales, tourism supports over 117,000 jobs in the Welsh tourism sector, contributing significantly to the economy. In Rhyl, the effects are just as crucial. Visitors drawn by our seaside appeal spend their money locally, helping sustain our shops, cafes, and attractions. Without the kiosks, Rhyl risks losing not just a monetary influx but a significant aspect of our coastal character.
The removal of these kiosks undermines our community’s efforts to revitalize and sustain our local economy and appeal. In the face of modernization, it's crucial we maintain what makes Rhyl unique. Therefore, we propose a balanced plan to reinstate the kiosks with updated designs that meet both modern standards and our heritage preservation goals.
We call on Denbighshire County Council to reconsider their decision. By reinstating the kiosks, we can protect the unique identity of Rhyl, support local businesses, and continue to attract the much-needed tourism our community relies upon. We urge all who love Rhyl, whether resident or visitor, to back this cause and breathe life back into our beloved seaside town.
