Reinstate free school transport for Bramford children
Reinstate free school transport for Bramford children
The Issue
For many years, children from Bramford attending Claydon High School benefited from free school transport due to the absence of a safe walking route. Growing up, I watched previous generations enjoy this essential support, ensuring they reached school safely every day. Yet today, despite the unchanged circumstances, families in Bramford find themselves unfairly burdened with transport costs while children in neighbouring villages continue to enjoy free transit.
What has changed? The roads remain the same, the dangers similarly present, yet the policy has shifted, placing an unnecessary financial strain on Bramford families who are already managing tight household budgets. According to the Suffolk Road Safety Partnership, the route from Bramford to Claydon High School involves significant traffic risks, with several blind spots and a lack of pedestrian pathways. These conditions make it clear that without proper transport, our children are exposed to serious safety hazards.
We call on Suffolk County Council to reconsider their current policy and reinstate free school transport for Bramford children. Such a move not only promotes safety but also supports community equity. Transport costs, which can amount to significant sums over the academic year, disproportionately affect families with lower incomes, leading to educational inequality.
In addition, according to data from the National Education Union, access to free school transport has a direct impact on school attendance and student performance. By ensuring students can travel safely and without financial worry, we promote a more inclusive, productive academic environment.
It’s time to stand up for what’s fair and right. Our children deserve the same chances as those from other villages. Let’s bring change to Suffolk County and protect the well-being of all our young students.
Please join us in urging Suffolk County Council to reinstate free school transport for Bramford children by signing this petition today. Your support can make all the difference in ensuring a safer, fairer journey to education.
