Reinstate Cats into Arran Elderslie Animal Control Bylaws

The Issue

Last week, I had a heartbreaking encounter with a very sick cat I called Maverick in Paisley, ON. This poor boy was in terrible condition and desperately seeking help. Maverick had once been loved by someone - he was neutered and declawed - but unfortunately, no one came forward to claim him. Despite his obvious suffering, animal control refused to assist because he was considered "out of their jurisdiction."
Tragically, the only option left for Maverick was to be humanely euthanized. Thankfully a local animal rescue organization graciously offered to cover his euthanasia to help him cross peacefully over the Rainbow Bridge. Without them, it would have been a horrible choice: to personally pay significantly out of pocket or let him continue to suffer. What an awful choice to have to make but one that wouldn’t have been a question if no other help was found.

In his last moments Maverick knew only warmth, compassion and the love of a few individuals who wanted to do their best by him, despite the awful decision that had to be made.  Maverick's life mattered. He was loved previously at some point despite how extreme his condition became and was loved immensely right until his very last breath. He will not be forgotten.

Once again I have been reminded and this experience has highlighted a significant issue within our community: the exclusion of cats from Arran-Elderslie Animal Control Bylaws. It is unacceptable that innocent animals like Maverick are left without proper assistance simply because they are not covered under these bylaws.

Cats are an integral part of our society and deserve equal protection and care as other domesticated animals. They provide companionship, reduce stress levels, and even help control rodent populations. It is estimated that there are over 9 million pet cats in Canada alone (source: Canadian Federation of Humane Societies). With such a large number of feline companions residing in our country, it is crucial that we address their welfare needs appropriately.

By reinstating cats into the Arran-Elderslie Animal Control Bylaws, we can ensure that all animals receive the necessary support when they need it most. This includes providing assistance for lost or injured cats like Maverick who may otherwise fall through the cracks due to jurisdictional limitations.

We urge you, the Arran-Elderslie citizens and council members, to take immediate action and amend the current bylaws to include cats. This change will not only benefit our feline friends but also enhance the overall well-being of our community.

Together, let's ensure that no more innocent lives like Maverick's are lost due to jurisdictional technicalities. Sign this petition today and help us reinstate cats into Arran-Elderslie Animal Control Bylaws!

Thank you for your attention and support.

Sincerely,

Jodi
