The Issue

When we devalue music education, we rob our children of essential opportunities for personal growth and happiness.

❌ Without sufficient funding, fewer people can afford to train as music teachers.

❌ This leads to fewer schools offering music programmes.

❌ Ultimately, fewer children will have the chance to discover their talents, express their emotions, and find their place in the world.

Music isn't merely an "extra" in a child's education—it's a fundamental component. It's through music children build confidence, express emotions, and feel a sense of belonging. By removing the bursary, we significantly reduce the opportunity for children to explore these possibilities. It means sticking them into a one-size-fits-all educational model that stifles creativity and restricts emotional and social development.

Removing creative subjects like music from schools could have a dramatic impact on children's mental health. Studies have consistently shown that involvement in music can reduce stress, build resilience, and improve emotional well-being. Without trained music educators, children will lose these benefits.

The government’s decision to scrap the music Initial Teacher Training (ITT) bursary for the 2026–27 academic year is a step back for education in the UK. It devalues music as a subject and overlooks its profound impact on a child’s holistic development.

We urge the government to reconsider and reverse this decision. Reinstate the music ITT bursary to ensure that music remains a vital part of education for every child. Allow future generations the chance to experience the positive impacts music education has to offer. Sign this petition to show your support for reversing this decision and preserving the future of music education in our schools.
