The Issue

In today’s digital age, social media has permeated every aspect of our lives. For millions, these platforms have become a primary source of information, guidance, and point of connection. Yet, amid the ocean of content, dangerous waves of misinformation are also reaching vulnerable shores, often with severe consequences.

Thousands of people have fallen victim to unsound health advice shared by unlicensed and unqualified individuals on social media. Personal health should never be left to chance or unfounded suggestions, especially when severe conditions like cancer are involved. An alarming number of unverified influencers dispense medical advice with the potential to cause harm, mislead patients, or delay essential medical treatments.

Similarly, in the financial domain, unethical individuals use platforms to distribute false investment schemes, wiping out life savings and putting families’ fiscal futures at risk. Vulnerable elderly individuals are particularly prey to these scammers, losing not just funds but suffering immense emotional and psychological trauma.

To thwart these harmful practices and protect the well-being of consumers, it is crucial to demand that social media influencers who wish to discuss critical topics such as health, medicine, finance, investments, law, legal advice, and education demonstrate they hold relevant degrees, licenses, or certifications. We propose that all influencers on major social media platforms be verified or face substantial penalties for non-compliance, including fines of $25,000 per violation.

This initiative is not an attack on creativity or freedom of expression but a necessary measure to ensure that any advice given carries the responsibility and authenticity that comes with accredited knowledge. Just as professionals in the offline world are required to be certified, those in the digital realm should be held to similar standards if they choose to impact people's lives so profoundly.

Your support in signing this petition could be the voice that drives this change, ensures accurate representation of critical topics, and ends the spread of misinformation blamed for countless avoidable losses. Only through concrete steps can we safeguard the health, finances, and legal well-being of our communities from damage wrought by misinformation.
