Regulate E-vehicles for Youth Safety in Berkeley Heights

The Issue

Having both seniors and children in my household, the safety of our community is paramount. Recently, the rise of underage and unregulated use of e-bikes, electric scooters, skateboards, and mopeds in Berkeley Heights has posed significant risks. These vehicles, often driven by teenagers or even younger children without licenses, have been ridden recklessly, sometimes on sidewalks, jeopardizing the safety of pedestrians and others on the road.

Implementing regulations is crucial to ensure these electric vehicles do not become a hazard. We propose the establishment of a mandatory registration system for these vehicles by parents. Furthermore, setting a strict speed limit of 15 MPH or below would help prevent accidents and ensure a safer environment for everyone.

Additionally, it's essential for young riders to wear helmets, have adequate lighting during night rides, and don reflective gear to increase visibility. Making sure that these vehicles are not allowed on the sidewalks is important for the safety of pedestrians.  Designating lanes for these vehicles can help in minimizing their impact on pedestrians and other vehicles.

Berkeley Heights, a community known for its family-friendly environment, must take action now to protect all residents from potential accidents and injuries. According to the National Safety Council, nearly 250,000 emergency department visits across the country are related to e-scooter, e-bike, and hoverboard incidents annually in the U.S. recently a child in New Providence was involved in an accident on River Road on their electric moped. Let's not add to this statistic in our town.

Join us in urging the Mayor and Police Chief to establish these life-saving regulations. Sign this petition and help make our community a secure place for everyone, young or old, to enjoy.
