Regulate Cat Rescues in NSW to Prevent Animal Harm

Regulate Cat Rescues in NSW to Prevent Animal Harm
The issue
My world turned upside down when I became a victim of unfounded accusations of animal neglect. It wasn't neglect; it was merely time for my cat's seasonal shave. However, not only was my beloved cat drugged and kidnapped under the guise of false information, but he was also handed over to an unapproved cat rescue. These rescues, instead of holding the welfare of cats as their priority, allegedly changed microchips without proper authorisation and perpetuated false narratives using out-of-context photos to manipulate public perception.
The two weeks that followed were a harrowing battle to reclaim my cat. During this ordeal, I uncovered a disconcerting truth: there is an alarming lack of standards and regulations governing unapproved cat rescues in NSW, allowing malpractice and unethical conduct to go unchecked. My painful experience is a testimony to a broader issue that many cat owners could eventually face if no action is taken.
The current Animal Companions Act, regulated by the Office of Local Government and the affiliation of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) allowing charity status must be amended to include stringent regulations and oversight for cat rescues. Overcrowding, illegal changes to microchip information, and abuse of charity status to bypass paperwork for gaining rehoming numbers are prevalent issues that demand immediate attention.
By implementing enforceable, clear guidelines and standards, the welfare of cats can be safeguarded, preventing incidents like mine from repeating. Approved and unapproved OLG rescues should be accountable for their actions, and they must adhere to ethical conduct and proper procedures.
Let's push for a safer environment where our pets' welfare is the top priority. Cats deserve safe and ethical treatment by those who assume responsibility for their care. Urgent regulatory changes are crucial to protect these vulnerable animals and restore trust in rescue organisations.
Sign this petition to urge the Office of Local Government and the ACNC to establish comprehensive regulations for approved cat rescues in NSW, ensuring our feline companions are always treated with the care and respect they deserve.
