Give Us A Graduation - Campbell Collegiate
The Issue
As a grade 12 at Campbell Collegiate, I was utterly saddened when I received the email notifying all students that the graduation has been officially cancelled. Not postponed, not altered in any way, but just cancelled. I can not express enough how long I have waited to walk across that stage and receive my diploma. My diploma I worked four years to earn. I am sure I am speaking for a majority of grade 12 students when I say, we at least earn some form of graduation. We did not stay up countless nights studying for exams, cramming in assignments, and stressing ourselves out for no final achievement. We earned this. As a student, I think there are many options that have to be looked into!
Grad does not have to be a week away...it could be in September! Take one day at a time. To all the grads who would love to see something changed, please sign this petition! We deserve to make the memories we have dreamt our whole lives for. There are so many options. Some of the following are ideas mentioned by Campbell Seniors:
(1) Have graduation at Mosaic Stadium (or a football field in general) where we can all be seated on the field spread out with 6 feet between each student to ensure appropriate social distancing. All parents can sit in the stands, where room can be distributed. With approx. 350 students graduating, there is more then enough room to make this a possibility on a 87,750 square foot field. Each student would get to individually walk across the stage in their what was supposed to be prom attire.
(2) Look into a drive-in movie theatre where students can park and then individually get out and walk on a stage. Each student would be wearing the appropriate protection whether that be a mask, gloves, etc.
(3) Virtual Graduation
We deserve more. We have earned more. Please consider the work we have put in when you make this decision. Why is it fair that I can go to Costco and wait in a 30 minute line standing 2 meters apart, but I can't sit in a chair 2 meters apart from another student to earn my diploma? Why is it fair that I can go walk around Wascana Lake that is crazy busy constantly passing people, but can't be spread out in a 87,750 square foot football field? There are so many options. I ask you, on behalf of the students signing this petition to please reconsider your decision to cancel our graduation. Our senior year did not end like it was supposed to. We missed out on countless "Senior Days" that we otherwise would have participated in. Please do not force us to miss out on our graduation too.
