The issue

The current AFL Tribunal system has shown inconsistencies and inequities that undermine the integrity of the sport. Fans, players, and stakeholders are calling for reforms to ensure fair and transparent decision-making processes. The growing frustration among fans and players demonstrates that confidence in the current tribunal system is at a low point.

Recent cases, including the suspension of North Melbourne player Paul Curtis, have highlighted a lack of transparency and consistency in tribunal decisions, with similar incidents resulting in vastly different outcomes for players. This inconsistency not only confuses players and fans but also affects the reputation of the AFL. An effective tribunal should uphold the principles of justice and transparency, yet the current system falls short of these ideals.

Past tribunal decisions reveal significant discrepancies in sentencing, raising questions about bias and the adequacy of current guidelines. Players have also expressed concerns about the subjective nature of some judgments, which can drastically affect their careers. A fair process must be implemented to ensure players are judged based on clear, consistent, and unbiased criteria.

We propose the following solutions: First, implement an independent review panel composed of experts outside the AFL to oversee tribunal decisions and ensure consistency. Second, establish clear and detailed guidelines for penalties, ensuring everyone understands the potential consequences of their actions. Third, enhance transparency by publicly documenting the reasoning behind each tribunal decision, allowing fans and stakeholders to comprehend judgment calls.

By instituting these changes, the integrity of the AFL can be preserved, building trust among players, fans, and the wider community. Please sign this petition to advocate for a fairer and more transparent AFL Tribunal system.
