Reform railroad retirement system

The Issue
The current structure of railroad retirement requires employees to obtain 30 years of service and reach the age of 60 to draw full compensation. As someone deeply invested in this system, I find this structure both limiting and impractical for many dedicated railroad employees.
Personally, I will have accrued 38 years of railway service by the time I reach 60, which means I'm working eight extra years beyond the 30-year requirement just to unlock full benefits. Many of my colleagues face similar situations, achieving the 30-year milestone long before the age of 60. Such scenarios are common, as well as scenarios where employees began their railroad service later in their lives, whereas, even at age 60 they have failed to accrue the necessary 30 years of service for their full benefit. Adopting an “80 and out” plan structure would still allow for those employees to have an option to retire based on their compensated years of service. Rail labor is intensive and very demanding of the minds and bodies of today’s railway employees, often loaded with stress both physically and mentally, and it’s high time we reform this outdated system to properly reward the railway workers who have dedicated so many years to this industry. With safety at the forefront of the railroad, it only makes sense to allow our workforce to naturally refresh itself by rewarding these hard working men and women to retire and enjoy life after their service to this critical infrastructure, which will open up job opportunities for younger minds and bodies yearning to enter this industry, which in turn, will stimulate stronger workforce that will be more stable, a critical and substantial raise in employee morale, which in turn always improves safety. I believe and know that reforming the railroad retirement will be an invaluable, key step in stabilizing this industry further.
I propose adopting an “80 and out” retirement policy, where employees can qualify for retirement once the sum of their age and years of service reaches 80. This alternative not only rewards long-term dedication but also provides employees with a more flexible and fair system.
It's important to support railroad employees who devote their lives to maintaining and operating vital transit services across the nation. A fair retirement policy acknowledges their commitment and offers a deserved level of respect and financial security.
Please join me in calling upon the relevant authorities to implement this much-needed reform. Sign the petition to support a fair and just railroad retirement system that aligns with the dedication and hard work of its employees.
