The Issue

I live in a community where domestic violence has become an increasingly alarming issue. Recently, there have been several shocking murders in the surrounding area, each stemming from domestic abuse situations. The most heart-wrenching part of these tragedies is the realization that the victims might have been saved if only they had been granted protection in time.

Current laws regarding personal protection orders (PPOs) make it difficult for victims to obtain the protection they desperately need. Often, victims are required to demonstrate evidence of abuse before a PPO is issued. This essentially means victims must wait until they have already been harmed to seek preventive measures. It's a vicious cycle that leaves many vulnerable at the hands of their abusers.

The intention of a PPO should be preventative, not reactive. It should provide security and peace of mind to those who are living in fear, not force them to endure abuse while waiting for a legal remedy. Therefore, I'm calling for a reform of the current requirements for obtaining a personal protection order.

We need legislation that acknowledges the signals and risk factors of domestic violence, rather than solely its aftermath. Policymakers should consider including potential threats and signs of coercive control as criteria for issuing a PPO. This could involve input and evidence from social services, police records of disturbances, and testimonials from family and friends.

In addition, providing victims and front-line responders with more education and resources could prevent dangerous situations from escalating. Immediate changes to streamline the application process and bolster support services for those at risk need to be prioritized.

It's imperative to create an environment where victims of domestic violence feel safe and supported to come forward without fear of retaliation or disbelief. By reforming the requirements for personal protection orders, we can save lives and bring peace to individuals and families facing domestic violence.

Please sign this petition to urge legislative bodies to act promptly and modify the current requirements, making it easier for the victims of domestic violence to receive the protection they need — before it’s too late.
