The Issue

Guns have always been an integral part of my family and, by extension, American culture. However, I have painfully observed that the lack of knowledge on proper usage can actually make weapons more of a hazard than a form of protection. This is why I am calling out for a reform in our gun laws.

This petition is not about limiting access to guns, but rather it aims to ensure their proper use and storage. It proposes that those who buy weapons should also be obligated to undergo practical gun safety courses, mandatory periodic practice sessions, and to have a safe, secure storage system.

The benefits of these seemingly rudimentary actions are plentiful. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's reporting on gun safety, firearms used in self-defense were less likely to cause accidental injuries compared to firearms for which the owner had not received proper safety instructions (NPR, 2016).

Furthermore, by establishing secure storage laws, we can potentially reduce firearm-related accidents in the homes. A study by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that laws promoting safe storage could reduce suicide rates by 78% and unintentional firearm injuries by 85% among adolescents (John Hopkins, 2019).

Let's take a step towards responsible gun ownership. By reforming the current gun laws to include mandatory safety training and secure storage procedures, we can facilitate a safer environment for all. Please sign this petition to move towards a future where the right to bear arms and the assurance of safety are not paradoxical.
