Reese's cups collapse: Demand clear warning when milk chocolate is substituted with sugar

The Issue

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups became iconic because they were made with real milk chocolate and real peanut butter.

Now, reports indicate that some Reese’s products use “chocolate candy,” compound coatings, or peanut butter “crème” instead of traditional milk chocolate and peanut butter. While companies can legally use alternative ingredient wording under FDA rules, many consumers may not notice these changes unless they carefully read the fine print.

If a product no longer contains milk chocolate as defined by FDA standards, that difference should not be buried in small text.

Consumers deserve transparency.

We are not asking Hershey to stop innovating. We are asking for honesty and clarity. When a product uses chocolate substitutes or peanut butter-style crème instead of traditional ingredients, there should be a clear, visible front-of-package disclosure.

Families should not have to decode ingredient lists to know what they are buying.

We call on The Hershey Company to commit to transparent labeling that clearly distinguishes products made with milk chocolate from those made with compound coatings or substitutes.

Quality built the Reese’s brand. Transparency will protect it.
