Reduce the £80 Fee for Retaining Private Number Plates

The Issue

Hi, this petition is a very simple one, which I believe is best kept short and I do hope will be considered with enough signatures.

I have owned many cars over the years and love to have my personal registration on my own vehicle as it means a lot to me, but paying £80 to remove the plate in order to place it on a new vehicle is expensive & unjustified. I have done this about 4 times over the span of around 5 years (each vehicle change) which amounts to £320!!! What’s shocking is I’ll surely continue to change cars over the years like most people do & upon selling a vehicle we are being forced to pay £80 or loose rights to a registration we have purchased is shocking.

The average person (according to the web) owns around 13 cars in their lifetime. £80 x by 13 accumulates to a whopping £1040! It’s unjustified and not fair at all, especially considering we have bought and own the rights to a registration.

An example of what would be fair is a smaller fee that purely covers the costs of a retention document… Another fair option would be a time period of a few months where the registration is to be placed on a vehicle within 3 months (for example) or then the free of £80 will apply.

As above, there are many examples or ways this can be made more affordable and fair for us citizens which I believe the government could put into place, even a simple fair reduction would be so much better!

Please sign this petition if you agree that the fee should be reduced!

Thank you.
