The Issue

Living in Johannesburg, South Africa, I never imagined my daily life would be disrupted by something as unsettling as a poorly managed construction project affecting our residence. As a student and maintenance officer, the chaos has not only impacted my academic life but has also taken a toll on my mental health. Each morning, I wake up with a sinking feeling, knowing that it might be another day dealing with unexpected floods or ceilings falling in our living spaces.

During the academic year, the residence where many of us reside was undergoing construction. It was a project that was supposed to improve our living conditions, yet what unraveled was a disastrous timeline of accidents and negligence. The construction company responsible did not have a proper disaster management plan, leading to recurring floods and hazardous conditions such as collapsing ceilings. These incidents disrupted our learning environment and safety, in what should have been a stress-free and supportive home for students.

The contractors’ evident lack of planning and poor methods have caused recurring inconveniences, with little accountability held to date. As residents, we were exposed to unsafe conditions due to inefficient construction management that failed to prevent or adequately respond to potential disasters. With no reprieve in sight and continuous distressing events, it’s only fair for us to demand a reduction in residence fees, charged to us under the premise of safe, habitable living conditions.

We call upon the authorities and parties involved to take immediate action in reassessing the residence fees to reflect the compromised living standards caused by this construction nightmare. It is not just a matter of seeking compensation but also an urgent requirement to address negligence and ensure all safety measures are enforced moving forward.

Join us in this fight for fairness and improved conditions by signing this petition. Your support is crucial in holding the responsible parties accountable and ensuring that no student ever has to endure such preventable hardships again. Sign now to put an end to the current distress and pave the way for a safer living environment for all students in the University of the Witwatersrand .
