Reduce speed limit on Melton Lane to 30mph for safety
The Issue
Melton Lane in Sutton Bonington is a picturesque country road that unfortunately harbors significant risks for its users. The current speed limit of 40mph is exceedingly dangerous, given the road's unique conditions and the diverse mix of traffic it supports. With no footpaths or dedicated pedestrian pathways along the lane, individuals are left to the mercy of speeding vehicles.
Residents and supported by Cllr Andy Brown (Notts CC) have observed an alarming increase in road use, compounded by the absence of essential safety infrastructure. Melton Lane serves as a vital access point for many, including school children catching buses, walkers exploring The Midshires Way, students, and locals heading to The Star Inn. Moreover, the lane is frequently traversed by equestrians and cyclists, all of whom rely on this road to navigate their daily routes.
The risk to life is palpable. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), reducing speed limits in rural areas can significantly decrease accident rates. Lowering Melton Lane's speed limit to 30mph is not only a sensible approach but also a preventive measure that aligns with best safety practices.
Numerous studies have indicated that reducing speed limits by even 10mph can dramatically enhance public safety, cutting down the likelihood of fatalities and serious injuries. The UK Government has promoted '20's Plenty for Us', a movement recognizing the importance of safer speed limits in residential areas. While this campaign focuses on even lower speeds, adopting a 30mph limit on Melton Lane would be a step in the right direction, balancing traffic flow efficiency and safety.
This Petition calls on Notts County Council on the grounds of safety to reduce the current 40mph speed limit on Melton Lane to 30mph.
Let’s prioritize the safety and well-being of our community by urging the local authorities in Sutton Bonington to take immediate action. By signing this petition, you're supporting the call to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians, and motorists alike. Please join us in advocating for a speed limit reduction on Melton Lane. Every signature brings us closer to a safer Sutton Bonington. Sign today and help us make a difference.
Many thanks for your support on behalf of residents and users of Melton Lane.
