The issue

As parents, educators, and concerned community members, our primary focus is ensuring the safety and well-being of our children. In Mt Gambier, South Australia, the busy stretch of Crouch Street North poses significant risks to children, families, and community members. The section between St Martins Drive and Max Young Drive experiences heavy traffic as it serves as the primary access road to a large college. This is particularly concerning for children and families of the Goodstart Early Learning Berrin, located at 90 Crouch Street North, who regularly navigate through this busy area.

Currently, the speed limit in this area does not reflect the standards in place for many other preschools and early learning centers across South Australia, where 40 km/h time-based speed limits are frequently enforced. Implementing such a speed limit on Crouch Street North would dramatically reduce the risk of accidents and enhance overall safety.

In addition to lowering the speed limit, we urge the authorities to install a crosswalk near Goodstart Berrin. This would provide a safe crossing point for families and children, thereby further minimizing the risk of any harm. Other locations in South Australia have effectively reduced risks by implementing similar measures, and there is no reason we cannot do the same here.

Traffic studies repeatedly show that reduced speed limits lead to fewer accidents and improved outcomes in pedestrian safety. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, pedestrian fatalities are significantly lower in areas with reduced speed zones, particularly those governing school and childcare surroundings.

We believe this is a small but crucial change that can make a world of difference in protecting our children, who are the most vulnerable on our roads. By signing this petition, you are supporting not just an adjustment in policy but a reinvestment in the safety and future of our community.

Please help us by signing and sharing this petition to drive positive change and ensure the safety of all children, families, and community members who traverse Crouch Street North daily. Together, we can push for safer streets and a brighter future for our kids.
