Redirect $5 Billion from Federal Voucher Program Into Public Schools Now
The Issue
Our public schools are being starved while private voucher programs expand. And right now, the U.S. Senate is reviewing the federal voucher program. This is our chance to stop it.
Instead of fixing underfunded classrooms, supporting burned-out teachers, or replacing crumbling school infrastructure, Congress is considering pumping billions into private and religious schools through so-called “school choice” programs.
A recent Vox report highlights how groups like the American Federation for Children are pushing education savings accounts—public funds for private use—while the New York Times details how these funds are helping fuel the rise of religious charter schools with minimal oversight.
Meanwhile, public schools—where the majority of America’s children learn—are being gutted. Educators are leaving. Students are packed into overcrowded classrooms with too few resources. Communities are watching their neighborhood schools wither.
This is a political choice—and we’re asking lawmakers to make a better one.
We call on the U.S. Senate to stop the expansion of the federal voucher program and redirect $5 billion into our public schools instead.
Use that funding to:
Pay and retain experienced teachers
Rebuild broken facilities
Give every student equal access to opportunity, regardless of zip code
Public money should fund public education—not private interests. Our schools are worth saving. And there’s still time.
