OpenAI has previously explored the possibility of introducing a verified-adult mode that would allow adults greater freedom to engage with mature content, including adult creative writing, erotica, and consensual adult roleplay. For many adult users, this represented the possibility of having a more complete creative experience in the AI platform they already know and prefer.

However, reports indicate that the proposed adult mode has been shelved indefinitely. This decision has left many adult users frustrated, particularly those who rely on ChatGPT for writing, storytelling, character development, and roleplay but are forced to turn to other AI platforms when their creative work involves mature content.

For many of us, ChatGPT is already the platform we would prefer to use for everything. Its capabilities, familiarity, and quality make it difficult to find an equivalent experience elsewhere. Yet the absence of a verified-adult option means users must split their creative work across multiple services or leave the platform entirely for certain projects.

We believe users should not have to choose between the AI platform they prefer and the creative freedom they need.

A properly designed, privacy-conscious, age-verified adult mode could allow consensual mature fiction and creative expression while maintaining firm protections against minors' access, exploitation, and illegal content.

We are asking OpenAI to reconsider the decision to shelve this initiative and to continue exploring a responsible solution that respects adult users, supports creative freedom, and gives people the opportunity to keep their creative work in one place.

Adults deserve the ability to create and engage with mature fiction responsibly. We believe that possibility is worth pursuing.
