Reconsider MLC Timetable Change

The issue

The recent decision by Methodist Ladies' College (MLC) in Melbourne, VIC, to alter the school timetable has sparked significant concern among students and parents alike. The revised schedule mandates an earlier start time, prioritizing attendance to check-ins over the essential need for adequate sleep. This decision, seemingly made without student input or consultation, raises multiple concerns regarding its benefits and effectiveness.

MLC has shut down the other petition which got over 1,000 signatures in just a matter of hours, it proves they don’t take into consideration what’s actually best for the students. Over half the school signed a petition to get rid of the new change, so obviously in the schools ‘extensive consultation’ they missed 1000 students.

In a recent Senior School assembly, students were informed that their alertness for general classes was lacking. This announcement not only highlighted the administration's perception of the student body's capability but also underscored a lack of dialogue with the students themselves regarding what might be contributing to their perceived lack of alertness. It's disheartening to see such an impactful decision be enacted without considering the voices of those directly affected.

Multiple studies, including research from reputable institutions, have demonstrated the importance of sufficient sleep for the cognitive and emotional development of adolescents. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers aged 13 to 18 years should sleep 8 to 10 hours per night. Insufficient sleep has been linked to diminished academic performance, increased stress levels, and adverse health outcomes. By prioritizing early morning check-ins over sleep, MLC risks undermining the well-being and academic success of its students.

Alternatively, the school could consider more flexible scheduling options that involve student feedback and accommodate the circadian rhythms of adolescents, aligning better with their natural sleep patterns. A collaborative approach involving teachers, students, and parents could result in a timetable that supports, rather than detracts from, students' academic and personal growth.

Please sign and support this petition to urge MLC to reconsider the timetable changes and engage with the student community to find a more suitable and effective solution.
