The Issue

I am a parent of a wonderful son who has Autism. Everyday, we face challenges in managing his condition, not least because the medical aid we rely on does not cover the medications prescribed or the recommended medical devices needed for his care.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) recognizes Autism as a disability, but the same understanding does not seem to extend to our medical aid scheme. This discrepancy is painful and financially draining, requiring families and individuals like us to shoulder large, often prohibitive costs. This lack of support from the medical aid schemes puts additional stress on parents and individuals dealing with this condition.
Autism is a common disorder, affecting 1 in 160 children worldwide according to the World Health Organization. There is a general understanding and support for Autism in many parts of the world. Despite this global recognition, it is disheartening to note that South African medical aids have been slow to act.
We, therefore, urge South African medical aids to classify Autism as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB). This step would ensure that all those living with Autism in South Africa receive the financial support they need for their medications and care. It would be a significant milestone on our pathway towards more comprehensive support and understanding for everyone living with Autism.
Please, lend your signature to support this crucial change. Every signee brings us one step closer to a more equitable and understanding approach to Autism treatment in South Africa. The time is now. Sign this petition.
