For too long the maths is not adding up, the official numbers of patients living with the worlds two largest and fastest growing blood and genetic disorders are not adding up, the statistics are not making the impact they should if calculated correctly. Too often, those of us who are battling, advocating and have lost loved ones to the devastating reality of Sickle Cell Disease have seen death certificates that list stroke, pneumonia, acute chest syndrome, silent brain injury, blood cancer, heart attack & disease, kidney and liver disease, non-healing stomach and leg ulcers, gallstones and more as the official cause of death. Yet, what these documents fail to underscore is the insidious and all-encompassing nature of Sickle Cell Disease, the primary cause, which precipitates all these secondary deadly ailments.

The Sickle Cell condition, a multi-organ disorder characterised by episodes of severe unmanageable pain, invariably leads to other serious medical conditions and illnesses manifesting in a single individual- ultimately leading to their untimely and tragic demise.

Official UK statistics state that 300 children are born with this condition every year and that there are 17,500 Sickle Cell patients in the UK. These figures are evident that there must be multiple deaths otherwise there would be far more people recorded living with this condition, so we also address the overwhelming number of unexplained deaths of Sickle Cell patients.

We believe that misrepresentation in official records further perpetuates ignorance and lack of awareness regarding the severity and complexity of Sickle Cell Disease, the results from this petition will allow us a recognised humane voice that is afforded to every other group of citizens living with debilitating, deadly health conditions in the UK.

Our community of Sickle Cell Patients across the UK, didn't just succumb to any one of the numerous health complications. They were primarily battling against the ravaging effects of Sickle Cell Disease. This needs to be recognised officially and factored into future medical research, patient care, and health policies. Therefore, we the Sickle Cell Care, Advocacy, Unity, Support with Empathy Group, (SC CAUSE), urge a change in the official UK Registration of Deaths: all Sickle Cell related deaths should list Sickle Cell Anaemia as the prime antecedent precipitating the fatal secondary health condition in the patient.
