Police Brutality Accountability in California

The Issue

We the public have had to sign petition after petition to open investigations surrounding police brutality.

California legislatures have proposed 1506 bill to create a new “independent” division that will investigate instances of police force resulting in death or serious bodily injury.

Under the bill's current language, the division would require a request from a local law enforcement agency or the district attorney before they are able to investigate.

Essentially? The police would police themselves.

There is no room for this stipulation if the division is meant to be truly independent.

There is no longer trust that law enforcement agencies or the DA will push for investigations. If there was, we wouldn't have had to sign petitions in the first place.

This petition asks that these legislatures prove their intentions with this bill were genuine, that they remove the language requiring a request, and that they allow this division to launch investigations on their own volition.

If there is no such change, this bill is nothing more than a token gesture.
