The Issue

The cat is already out of the bag with OpenZFS, a revolutionary file system that boasts unprecedented features and capabilities. It's time to make it universal by granting all operating systems legal access to this technology. As a passionate advocate for open-source and cross-platform compatibility, I believe it's essential to re-license ZFS under the Universal Permissive License (UPL), ensuring that every OS can harness the full power of this incredible system.

OpenZFS is derived from the original ZFS and retains the original CDDL license because CDDL prevents relicensing derivative works. CDDL is incompatible with GPL2, which the Linux kernel is licensed under. In order to get OpenZFS into the Linux kernel, the license has to change to something more compatible. UPL is a license that Oracle has used previously when they changed their DTRACE product from CDDL to UPL. It was then later incorporated into the Linux kernel.

ZFS, originally developed by Sun Microsystems, has been a game-changer in data management. Its advanced features like data integrity verification against silent data corruption, continuous integrity checking, and automatic repair, make it a vital tool for businesses, consumers, and developers alike. However, due to its current licensing restrictions, many popular operating systems cannot legally integrate ZFS into their software.

Re-licensing ZFS under UPL would break down these barriers, fostering innovation and allowing operating systems like Linux, macOS, and Windows to fully incorporate ZFS. This not only benefits developers, who can work across platforms without legal hurdles but also enhances the user experience by offering robust data management features across the board.

In a world where collaboration and openness are key to technological progress, keeping ZFS confined within certain boundaries limits its potential. By freeing ZFS with a UPL, we enable a more interconnected and innovative future for everyone in the tech industry. More creative solutions will emerge when developers are not hindered by licensing constraints.

I urge everyone, from developers to tech enthusiasts, to support this petition. Let us push for a licensing change that reflects our community's values of openness and interoperability. Sign this petition to call for the re-licensing of ZFS to UPL, and be part of the movement towards a more open and unified technological ecosystem.
