Raise the National Driving Age to 18 in the United States

The Issue

As a concerned citizen, I am deeply troubled by the fact that the United States stands alone as a major economic power without a national driving age set at 18. We have already recognized that 18 is an appropriate age for voting; it's time we apply this standard to driving as well.

Raising the national driving age to 18 would bring about several significant changes. Firstly, it would put an end to the Graduated Driver License program, which often puts inexperienced drivers on our roads. Secondly, research indicates that increasing the minimum driving age can reduce vehicle accidents. According to a study by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), teen drivers are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash.

Thirdly, raising the driving age could help stabilize insurance premiums for all drivers. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that car insurance rates decrease when teenage accident rates go down - something we can expect if we raise our national driving age.

Lastly, this change could lead to phasing out school-based Drivers Ed programs in places where they still exist - freeing up resources for other educational needs.

We must act now and align ourselves with other major nations by raising our national driving age to 18. This is not just about consistency; it's about safety and financial stability for all road users across America. Proposed law would not affect those currently age 16 and age 17 but those currently under age 16. Please sign this petition and join us in advocating for safer roads and responsible policies.
