Raise Louisiana’s Minimum Auto Insurance Limits to Protect Injury Victims

The Issue

$15,000 Per Person is NOT Enough – It’s Time for Change!
Louisiana’s minimum auto insurance requirements haven’t kept up with rising medical costs, leaving injured drivers and passengers without the financial protection they deserve. Right now, the law only requires:

🚗 $15,000 per person
🚗 $30,000 per accident

But in today’s world, $15,000 doesn’t even cover a single night in the hospital, let alone surgery, rehab, or long-term care for serious injuries. This outdated system shifts the financial burden to hospitals, taxpayers, and the victims themselves.

The Problem
When insurance doesn’t cover medical costs, injured people face:
✔ Out-of-pocket expenses that can lead to bankruptcy
✔ Higher health insurance premiums for everyone
✔ Strained hospitals forced to absorb unpaid bills
✔ Injustice for accident victims who can’t afford necessary care

The Solution
Louisiana lawmakers need to increase the state’s minimum auto insurance limits to reflect today’s medical costs. Neighboring states have higher minimums, and it’s time Louisiana stopped lagging behind

We urge the Louisiana Legislature to pass legislation increasing the minimum bodily injury liability insurance limits to:

🚗 $50,000 per person
🚗 $100,000 per accident

This modest increase that aligns with inflation and rising medical costs would move Louisiana forward with other states who have already taken steps to modernize their insurance laws to better protect their residents.

Although some worry that increasing minimum insurance requirements will lead to higher premiums, data shows that states who raised their minimum coverage levels have experienced slower premium increases compared to the national average over similar periods. Additionally, higher minimum insurance requirements correlate with lower rates of uninsured motorists, as most states that implemented these changes saw a decline in uninsured drivers.

A study by the American Association for Justice found raising minimum coverage limits helps protect both drivers and the healthcare system.

By raising minimum coverage, we can:
✅ Ensure injury victims receive proper medical treatment
✅ Prevent hospitals and taxpayers from covering unpaid medical bills
✅ Make sure at-fault drivers are held responsible for the harm they cause
