The Issue
I grew up driving on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) and it’s a nightmare to drive on. At the current speed limit of 55 mph, driving becomes not only grueling but also incredibly stressful. Everyone is constantly trying to pass each other, resulting in chaotic and even dangerous driving conditions. This is personal to me because I’ve experienced firsthand the anxiety and frustration of navigating this road as drivers around me constantly switch lanes, trying to maintain a speed that feels natural and safe.
The speed limit on the LIE simply does not reflect the natural flow of traffic, where over 90% of drivers exceed the current 55 mph limit. This disparity between the posted speed and the actual road conditions leads to more frequent traffic stops and unnecessary fines for drivers who are, paradoxically, trying to maintain the safest rate of travel by matching the surrounding vehicles. Moreover, this encourages erratic driving behavior as motorists seek to overtake those obeying the speed limit, further intensifying traffic congestion and increasing the risk of accidents.
Increasing the speed limit to a more reasonable 65 or 70 mph could mitigate these hazards. In states and areas where speed limits align more closely with what drivers naturally adhere to, studies have shown a reduction in lane switching and crashes (National Motorists Association). By amending this outdated limit, Nassau County & Suffolk County not only adheres to the realities of driver behavior but also promotes a safer and more efficient expressway.
The goal of this petition is to urge the authorities in Nassau County, NY, and Suffolk County, NY, to consider and implement this necessary change.
