Quiet Swim Time at the Pool

The Issue

As someone who is sensitive to noise, visiting public pools can sometimes be a less than relaxing experience. The constant blare of music, announcements from loudspeakers, and general cacophony can make what should be a soothing atmosphere feel overwhelming and stress-inducing. I am not alone in this experience, and many others in the Comox Valley share a similar sentiment, especially individuals with auditory sensitivities, autism, anxiety, or those who simply prefer a more tranquil environment for their aquatic activities. It is essential that we foster inclusivity and consider the needs of all community members, including those who require quieter environments to fully enjoy their swimming experience.

Having dedicated quiet swim times at our public pools would provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the water without the added noise. It would allow a peaceful setting where individuals can focus on relaxation, exercise, or personal peace without the intrusion of music or unnecessary noise.

According to the World Health Organization, noise pollution is a growing environmental concern and can significantly impact people's well-being. A free swim time devoid of loud sounds would be a refuge for those concerned about their noise exposure while also serving as a model for health-conscious and community-oriented practices.

By implementing a few hours a day dedicated to silent swimming experiences, we can enrich the lives of many, foster an inclusive community atmosphere, and offer a more diverse range of swim options to meet the needs of all residents. This could be achieved by scheduling quiet hours during off-peak times, ensuring minimal disruption to the regular pool schedule.

Please join me in advocating for this necessary change. Sign this petition to urge the Comox Valley pool authorities to implement quiet swim hours, making our pools more accessible and enjoyable for everyone who steps into the water.
