The Issue

On December 5, 2025, my family's life changed forever. My sister, just 25 years old, was driving home from work, abiding by the speed limit on a 35mph back road, when she was struck by a drunk driver speeding at 66mph. She was killed instantly in that tragic accident, while the driver sustained only minimal injuries.

What followed was measly court dates, where the driver responsible for her death was sentenced to a mere 7.5 years in jail. A short sentence for causing such a devastating loss. In a few short years, this individual will be able to walk free, while my sister, with her dreams, her future, and all her potential, will remain just a memory. This harsh reality demonstrates a failure in our justice system, which tends to be corrupt and skewed, offering minimal consequences for severe crimes of negligence.

Drunk driving is a choice—a deadly and irresponsible one. In New Hampshire, there must be harsher penalties for those who choose to get behind the wheel under the influence and take the lives of innocent people. The current sentencing guidelines for negligent homicide due to drunken driving make light of the serious nature of these crimes, leaving victims' families without justice and allowing offenders to evade true accountability.

Statistics show that drunk driving remains a leading cause of motor vehicle fatalities in the United States, claiming over 10,000 lives annually. Each one of these deaths is preventable, yet the punishment does not fit the crime. Longer sentences for drunk drivers who cause fatalities would serve as a deterrent and ensure that justice is served for all victims.

We call upon the New Hampshire legislature to review and amend the current laws regarding sentencing for negligent homicide by intoxicated drivers. By enforcing stricter penalties, we can protect our communities and ensure that no family has to endure the heartache that ours has.

Join us in urging lawmakers to prioritize the safety of innocent citizens and reinforce justice by signing this petition. Together, we can demand real change and take a firm stand against drunk driving in New Hampshire. Please sign and share this petition to make our roads safer for everyone.
