As of this Thursday, England will be going into lockdown with one notable exception - schools universities, and colleges.  This is despite the fact that it is predicted that 1 in 50 secondary school and college students have contracted the virus according to a study conducted by education specialist TES; and of course, the numbers are steeply rising.

A large proportion of our community relies on public transport to get to and from school and college and are also at risk of catching the virus during transit, as well as within the campus. Additionally, many students live with people high risk/vulnerable family members, who could be putting them at risk.

Schools and colleges throughout the borough have faced small outbreaks, and while these have been contained to an extent, sooner or later, we will face much larger outbreaks in educational settings.

Luckily, we live in an age where we can continue lessons through video conferencing platforms (such as Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, and Zoom) and it is true that learning on campus is normally best, but we can emulate this as close as possible online.

The National Education Union has voiced support for closure, and the Office for National Statistics has suggested that schools and colleges have been "an engine for transmission" during the second wave. The ONS has also suggested that keeping schools open could lead to a longer lockdown period, which would inevitably be worse for our education.

Countrywide petitions have gained massive momentum with close to 100,000 people signing the petition in the hours following the PM's speech on Saturday.

While schools and colleges remain open, we risk having a major outbreak throughout the borough, and we should be doing all we can to prevent this, even if it means closing for a short amount of time.
