Provide truly accessible housing for people with complex disabilities in Cardiff and Wales
The Issue
Since 2018, I've been waiting to be re-housed by Cardiff Council to a property that accommodates my severe and complex disabilities. For the past four years, I have been unable to shower or bathe in my own home. Instead, I endure the indignity and discomfort of using wash bowls filled with water brought to my bed. This isn't just inconvenient; it's inhumane and unacceptable in the 21st century. People with complex needs shouldn't have to wait inordinate amounts of time merely to enjoy a basic human necessity like bathing in dignity.
I urge Cardiff Council to expedite my re-housing to a suitable home that meets my accessibility needs. But this isn't just my fight—it's a plea for all individuals with severe disabilities who require larger properties with complex adaptations. Our Welsh government needs to acknowledge that this is a broad issue affecting many, and take decisive action.
We need a dedicated fund established specifically for disabled individuals requiring unique housing solutions. Such a fund would empower councils across Wales to readily accommodate people like myself, ensuring no one lives in conditions that compromise dignity and basic human rights.
According to the Office for National Statistics, one in five people in Wales are disabled. This is not a minor issue, but a pressing societal concern. Rejecting people the opportunity for basic hygiene and home adaptations is a disservice not only to those in need, but to the values of compassion and inclusivity that Wales should uphold.
I call on the Welsh government and local councils to take this issue seriously by creating a dedicated fund and framework for re-housing individuals to homes with necessary adaptations. Sign this petition to support not just my re-housing, but to stand up for the rights and dignity of all disabled individuals across Wales.
