The issue

I am reaching out in desperation not only for myself but for countless others in a similar position. Like many others, I find myself in a precarious situation due to the lack of financial assistance available for middle-class families. Due to my growing medical bills, our household is facing significant financial strain. I have not been able to work for many years due to my mental and physical health. Unfortunately, my husband's income, which is just above the threshold set by Centrelink, disqualifies us from receiving any substantial assistance.

The current system overlooks the unique challenges faced by middle-class families who are neither wealthy nor impoverished but still struggle to make ends meet due to unforeseen circumstances such as medical emergencies. The rising cost of living, which includes petrol, food, rates, utility bills and much more, are impacting everyone, not just low income families. In our case, the rising costs of healthcare have become overwhelming, and there are many others who face similar struggles due to various reasons.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the cost of living has seen a substantial increase over recent years, with healthcare and education expenses rising at a notable pace. Yet, the support systems in place have not adjusted accordingly, leaving middle-class families grappling with economic challenges without adequate assistance.
I have recently had a bad fall, and need xrays, ultra sounds, blood tests and more, and not all of these services are Bulk Billed and the Medicare threshold is very low, leaving huge out of pocket costs. I either find the money to be able to look after my health, but struggle to pay other bills, or I suffer and decline, causing more medical costs to the government if I end up in hospital.
I am sure this scenario sounds familiar to many Australians who are struggling with their health.

We are calling on the Australian Government to reevaluate the existing financial assistance programs and consider expanding the eligibility criteria to include more middle-class families who are in genuine need of support. Concrete actions, such as raising the income threshold for assistance or introducing specific grants to alleviate healthcare, could significantly aid families in distress. A discount card for one income families in the middle class, who can not get a Health care card or other benefits, would be a huge advantage. This is a plea for equitable financial assistance for those who fall into the gap of receiving too little help but not being affluent enough to manage these burdens alone. By making these changes, it is possible to provide a safety net for the middle class and ensure that all families can maintain a reasonable standard of living.

Please sign this petition to urge the government to address this pressing issue and bring about much-needed financial reform for the middle class. Let us push for a system that recognizes the struggles of all its citizens and provides fair and equitable support where it is deserved.
