As a parent and advocate, my family's experience has highlighted a much larger problem across Northern New Brunswick. Many young adults with complex disabilities reach adulthood only to find there are few appropriate housing options, limited supports, and no clear pathway forward. This issue extends beyond one individual or family – it affects every young adult who deserves the opportunity to live safely, with dignity, and as independently as possible.

In Northern New Brunswick, the landscape for support services and housing for young adults with complex disabilities is both challenging and under-resourced. According to recent studies, the demand for such services continues to grow, yet funding and infrastructure have not kept pace. Currently, many families are faced with moving far from their communities or struggling to find inadequate solutions that often do not provide the necessary care.

Moreover, a survey conducted within community organizations indicates that the number of young adults waiting for suitable housing has doubled in the last five years. This is an untenable situation that calls for urgent action from both provincial and local governments.

Creating a future where all young adults with complex disabilities have the support they need requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, the provincial government must allocate additional funding to develop and maintain specialized housing and support services in Northern New Brunswick. This includes both immediate action and long-term strategic planning to accommodate future needs.

Secondly, partnerships should be encouraged between government bodies, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. By creating a collaborative environment, we can harness a broader range of resources and expertise to innovate and tailor solutions specific to the needs of these individuals and their families.

Finally, setting up a task force dedicated to addressing the needs of young adults with complex disabilities will ensure that their voices and those of their families are central to decision-making processes. Regular assessment and adjustment of services should be implemented to keep pace with changing circumstances and emerging needs.
