The Issue

My granddaughter was born with a cleft palate and, as with many other families facing similar situations, we quickly learned about the challenges that come with it beyond the obvious. One of the most immediate and critical issues is feeding. Children with cleft palate often struggle to feed due to their condition, which can make something as basic as nourishing them a difficult task.

Feeding equipment specifically designed for children with cleft conditions, such as specialized bottles and teats, can be a lifeline. However, access to these essential tools can be restricted due to their cost, leaving families to cope with both the emotional and financial pressures of providing proper care. One bottle was provided to us 24 hours after our granddaughter was born, obviously one isn’t enough. All hospitals should be provided with a package for babies born with cleft on arrival.

Cleft conditions are relatively common, impacting roughly 1 in 700 births in the United Kingdom alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Such conditions require not only medical intervention but also specialized equipment that aids in feeding and growth during vital developmental phases.

We urge the government to cover the cost of feeding equipment for children with cleft conditions. Providing all hospitals with packs ready.

By signing this petition, you will be advocating for policy changes that ease the burdens on families and ensure that every child with a cleft palate has the opportunity to thrive. Let's come together to support the health and well-being of children born with cleft conditions. Please sign this petition to make it happen.
